Goal of the century?
Anyone who is at all interested in football has probably already seen this, but I just had to post it.
People are comparing it to Maradona's Goal of the Century (and the man himself has already publicly named Messi as his "successor"). The two are ridiculously similar, and I sort of wonder if Messi was consciously trying to recreate that goal. He seems good enough (and probably cocky enough, though I haven't met the kid) to be able to think about that while performing all of his crazy footwork. I think that Messi's goal is more fun to watch. I guess these judgments are heavily influenced by circumstances. Only World Cup goals were considered for the "official" title of Goal of the Century while an untold number of amazing strikes have been made in all levels of football over the last century. On the other hand, the World Cup is unlike any other stage in sport. To be able to perform like that under those conditions is pretty incredible (but then again, the Spanish league is one of the toughest in the world).
I also admit that I prefer Messi's goal because it didn't come minutes after something like the infamous Hand of God Goal (poor England).
P.S. The Hand of God announcer does one of the most amazing and prototypical Spanish announcer explosions in history.
